Ancient Romanian Gold Helmet Recovered After Theft: Coțofenești Artifact Returned in Plea Deal

A priceless 2,500-year-old Romanian gold helmet, a significant artifact linked to the ancient Dacian civilization, has been successfully retrieved. This invaluable Coțofenești helmet, revered as a cultural icon of Romania, was stolen last year from a museum in the Netherlands. Its recovery was announced as part of a plea agreement reached with the individuals suspected of the theft.

During a news conference held on Thursday in Assen, an eastern Dutch city, prosecutors publicly unveiled the ancient treasure. The presentation was conducted under the watchful guard of police officers, some of whom wore balaclavas, highlighting the artifact’s immense value and the sensitivity of the recovery operation.
