Blue Whale Songs Fading: Scientists Sound Alarm Over Ocean Health

Scientists are expressing grave concern as blue whales, the majestic giants of the ocean, are observed to be significantly reducing their vocalizations, often referred to as `songs`. A recent study highlighted in National Geographic reveals a startling nearly 40 percent decrease in the intensity of blue whale vocalizations.

This alarming trend is attributed to so-called marine heatwaves, which are causing ocean temperatures to rise. Consequently, krill, the primary food source for blue whales, has become severely depleted.

Fellow oceanographer Kelly Benoit-Bird further emphasized the gravity of the situation, noting that the scarcity of food for these massive creatures will have profound implications for the entire marine ecosystem.

The blue whale, a member of the baleen whale suborder, is recognized as the largest known animal to have ever existed on Earth. These colossal mammals can weigh up to 150 tons and reach impressive lengths of up to 33 meters.
