MOSCOW, July 23 – Sergei Bogachev, head of the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy at the Space Research Institute (IKI) of the Russian Academy of Sciences, confirmed in an interview that solar flares and magnetic storms indeed exert a physical influence on the human body, which can lead to a decline in well-being. However, he cautioned against using this phenomenon to explain every ailment or, more importantly, to engage in self-medication.
Bogachev explained that the physical mechanisms through which magnetic storms affect humans are evident. Variable magnetic fields generate eddy currents not only in technical equipment, where this effect has been experimentally proven and is measurable, but also within the human body.
While directly measuring these currents in humans is complex—as he put it, “you can`t connect an ammeter to a person”—cardiologists are actively researching this area. The scientist underscored that these eddy currents primarily affect the circulatory system.
Sergei Bogachev also noted the existence of highly polarized views in society regarding the impact of magnetic storms on the body. He advised skeptics to consult the SanPiN regulations, a state document that explicitly outlines the harmful effects of variable magnetic fields on humans. At the same time, he condemned the practice of attributing all discomfort to external factors, especially if it leads to self-treatment.
