Investigators have uncovered a chilling link: a 29-year-old Uber driver allegedly used ChatGPT to generate images of a burning Los Angeles. Furthermore, mobile phone geolocation data placed him just 10 meters from the fire`s origin as it began.

AI-generated images have been presented as crucial evidence in the case against the alleged arsonist responsible for a devastating Los Angeles fire. California authorities have apprehended Jonathan Rinderknecht, 29, charging him with intentional arson for what is described as one of the state`s most destructive blazes.
The inferno, which occurred in January 2025, virtually annihilated the renowned Pacific Palisades district in Los Angeles, an area populated by numerous Hollywood celebrities. Rinderknecht, then an Uber driver, was a resident of this very community.
Despite the accusations, Rinderknecht has pleaded not guilty. During court proceedings, his ChatGPT queries, which explicitly demonstrated an intense preoccupation with fires and arson, were presented as significant evidence and a basis for his arrest.
At a press conference, authorities described the accused as a pyromaniac, a person consumed by an obsession with fire. Prior to the incident, Rinderknecht was observed watching rap videos depicting objects in flames. Investigators also uncovered his ChatGPT queries from months before the Los Angeles fire, where he requested the AI to generate images of burning forests and crowds fleeing an inferno. These prompts offer a glimpse into Rinderknecht`s psychological state and potential motives.
Notably, he asked ChatGPT to visualize a city split in two: one half depicting a poor, burning quarter, and the other, wealthy residents observing the destruction. He further requested a fence with massive gates topped by a dollar sign to divide these areas. Witnesses who rode with Rinderknecht as an Uber driver on the day of the fire described him as agitated and angry. After dropping off a passenger, he allegedly committed the arson, called 911, and then drove away. Disturbingly, he paused to record fire engines passing by and filmed rescue efforts on his phone. Eyewitnesses described the Pacific Palisades during the fire as resembling a war zone. Dozens perished, thousands were evacuated, and countless homes and businesses were irreversibly destroyed.
Beyond Pacific Palisades, the blaze also ravaged other communities, including Altadena, Malibu, and Eaton. This catastrophic event ranks among California`s ten deadliest fires and is the third most destructive in the state`s history. The uncontrolled inferno claimed over 30 lives, and estimates suggest the total damages exceeded $250 billion.
