Determining the Optimal RAM Capacity for Modern PCs

Computer components

A technology expert, Cesar Cadenas, recently provided recommendations regarding the optimal amount of random access memory (RAM) necessary for personal computers in 2025.

The specialist explained that the suitable RAM capacity for a PC is highly dependent on its intended use and the operating system (OS) it utilizes. For a standard office computer running Windows 11, 16 gigabytes (GB) of RAM is considered fully sufficient. However, for systems utilizing macOS or ChromeOS, due to the specific architectural demands of these platforms, 8 GB of RAM is often deemed optimal.

Tasks involving intense graphical work, such as professional video editing or demanding video games, necessitate significantly more memory. For these intensive applications, the technical reviewer advises choosing a computer equipped with 32 GB of RAM.

“More RAM will ensure smoother performance for games and professional video editing applications,” the expert emphasized.

Cadenas acknowledged that a very limited group of specialized users might require machines with 48 GB or even 64 GB of memory. This extreme capacity is typically reserved for professionals engaging in activities such as editing video in 8K resolution, performing complex technical computations, or handling other highly demanding professional tasks. However, for the vast majority of mainstream PC users, any capacity exceeding 32 GB would be considered excessive.

In related news, the CEO of Epic Games, Tim Sweeney, stated in late November that the increasing costs of PC components pose significant challenges to the video game market. This rise in component prices is largely attributed to the surge in demand from artificial intelligence (AI) services.
