Dynamo and Spartak Share Points in Heated 2-2 Moscow Derby

This match was characterized by fierce competition, several player injuries, and the sending off of Spartak`s head coach. Concurrently, Krasnodar solidified its position at the top of the league table, while Lokomotiv extended its unbeaten run.

Saturday`s derby between Dynamo and Spartak proved to be a true spectacle: intense emotions, player injuries, and a coach`s expulsion overshadowed even the league leaders` matches. Although neither the “white-blues” (Dynamo) nor the “red-whites” (Spartak) are currently in the top six this new season, they remain serious contenders for the championship title.

Enduring the initial pressure from the hosts, the “red-whites” (Spartak) launched a successful counterattack, employing their signature man-to-man pressing. In the 19th minute, Denisov`s pass behind Zaynutdinov led to Dynamo`s new defender obstructing goalkeeper Lunev, which Levi Garcia promptly capitalized on. Shortly after, a severe head-on collision occurred between Denisov and Bitello. Both players required repeated medical attention, with blood seeping through their bandages and down their faces. These three – Denisov, Bitello, and Garcia – emerged as the match`s central figures.

While Denisov`s contribution was clear, last season`s top assist provider, Bitello, scored twice before halftime. The second goal sparked a furious reaction from Spartak`s head coach Stanković, who was shown a red card by referee Egor Egorov. Stanković vehemently protested, arguing that the referee should have stopped play after Marquinhos fell and remained near Dynamo`s penalty area. However, it was determined there was no foul. In the second half, Denisov once again actively rejoined the game, delivering a dangerous cross that resulted in another goal for Levi Garcia. The final score was a hard-fought 2-2 draw.

Coach`s Perspective: Valery Karpin on Dynamo`s Performance

“We were better in terms of intensity. I`m not talking about tactics, but about desire, dedication – call it what you will. However, we were worse in terms of coordinated actions. For example, if Makarov starts an attack because he fouls Rubens (Dynamo`s Brazilian midfielder), what is that? It`s obvious lack of coordination. There were many mistakes. But these errors weren`t just random player mistakes; they occurred because both teams pressed very well, correctly, and effectively. So, the opponent`s resistance also needs to be taken into account.”

It`s also worth noting the return to the field after injuries for Dynamo`s Kokorin and Spartak`s Bongonda, both of whom came on as substitutes late in the game. Furthermore, two newly acquired players from the French championship, Woo and Djiku, featured in the “red-whites`” starting lineup.

Other RPL Highlights: Lokomotiv`s Draw and Krasnodar`s Victory

In Grozny, Lokomotiv also played to a draw. Credit must be given to Akhmat`s coach Cherchesov, who chose a precise tactic, depriving the “railroaders” (Lokomotiv) of attacking space: upon losing possession, Akhmat`s players immediately retreated behind the ball line as a whole team. Having worn down the Muscovites, the hosts created dangerous attacking opportunities in the second half and were much closer to victory. However, Batrakov was fortunate to equalize, making it 1-1. With eight goals, Alexey is once again the RPL`s top scorer.

A few words about Krasnodar. The champions secured their sixth victory of the season, this time against Akron with a 2-1 scoreline. Krivtsov, who was deployed as the main striker in Cordoba`s absence, was named man of the match, scoring the winning goal. However, the “Kuban team” (Krasnodar) will be without Diego Costa for their next match against Zenit due to his expulsion.

Current Russian Premier League Standings:

Krasnodar leads with 19 points, followed by Lokomotiv with 16, while CSKA and Baltika each have 15 points. Rubin has 14 points. Zenit and Spartak share sixth place with 12 points apiece. Dynamo is in eighth position with nine points. Lokomotiv, CSKA, and Baltika remain undefeated.

Sunday`s program for the eighth round includes matches featuring Zenit and CSKA. Russia`s wealthiest team, Zenit, will challenge this season`s surprise team, local Baltika, in Kaliningrad. Meanwhile, the army club (CSKA) faces a tough away game in Rostov-on-Don.
