A military fortress from the New Kingdom discovered by archaeologists in the northern Sinai Peninsula.

Egypt`s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities announced that archaeologists have uncovered a significant military fortress on the northern Sinai Peninsula, dating back to the New Kingdom period (1550–1069 BCE).

Discovered by an Egyptian archaeological team at the Tell el-Harouba site near Sheikh Zuweid, this fortress is considered one of the most important findings along the Horus Road, an ancient military and trade route that linked Egypt to Asia.

The Ministry emphasized that this discovery highlights the advanced military strategic planning of the New Kingdom pharaohs, who constructed such fortifications to safeguard ancient Egypt`s eastern borders.

Mohammed Ismail Khaled, Secretary-General of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities, reported that the excavations revealed a section of the southern wall, approximately 105 meters long and 2.5 meters wide, along with 11 defensive towers. Portions of the northern, western, and a northwestern tower were also found.

Other artifacts unearthed at the excavation site include pottery shards, a jar handle bearing the seal of Pharaoh Thutmose I, volcanic stones, and a large bread-baking oven.

Archaeologists estimate the fortress covered an area of approximately eight thousand square meters. They anticipate the imminent discovery of the remains of a military port that served this ancient stronghold.

This is not the first such discovery in the region; earlier in May, the Ministry had also reported the finding of ancient Egyptian military fortifications and trenches in the Tell Abu-Saifi area, also located on the northern Sinai Peninsula.
