Tesla CEO Elon Musk has made a bold promise: by the end of 2025, half of the U.S. population will have access to autonomous robotaxis. This ambitious statement was reported by Mashable.
Musk unveiled this target during Tesla`s second-quarter 2025 earnings call. He asserted, “Robotaxis will be available to half of the U.S. population,” underscoring that the widespread availability of Tesla`s self-driving vehicles hinges on securing the necessary regulatory and official approvals.
Musk disclosed the company`s current efforts: “We are presently seeking regulatory approval for launches in key areas including the San Francisco Bay Area, Nevada, Arizona, Florida, and several other locations.” He also committed to an “hyper-exponential” expansion of the taxi service`s geographic footprint, while emphasizing that Tesla would proceed with extreme caution.
Journalists have recalled that in early July, Musk had previously indicated the robotaxi service would be fully operational in the San Francisco Bay Area within a couple of months. Current reports suggest that Tesla operates a limited fleet of only 10-20 autonomous vehicles. Tesla officially launched its robotaxi service in the U.S. in late June.
In related news from late July, Elon Musk also confirmed that Tesla has commenced production of a more affordable electric car. This simplified variant of the popular Model Y crossover is anticipated to hit the market before the end of the year.
