Tragedy struck on Kamchatka`s Vilyuchinsky volcano when three tourists fell, resulting in two fatalities. A large-scale rescue operation involving 45 individuals was launched. Authorities confirmed the group was unregistered, and the climbing route had been officially closed since July due to the high risk of rockfalls. Local guides consistently highlight the extreme dangers of ascending Vilyuchinsky during the summer months.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations (MES) reported the deaths of two tourists during an ascent of Vilyuchinsky volcano in Kamchatka. On Saturday, three climbers fell from a considerable height. One of the survivors managed to contact rescuers, prompting the immediate deployment of a helicopter from the Disaster Medicine Center, carrying a team of rescuers and medical personnel.
During the subsequent search operations, two of the tourists were found. Both had tragically died from their injuries. The third participant in the expedition was also located and confirmed to be unharmed. In total, 45 people were engaged in the extensive rescue effort.
Victor, a guide from the “Krugosvetka” company, who operates in Kamchatka every summer, characterized Vilyuchinsky volcano as a significantly challenging and perilous route. He elaborated on the risks:
“Accidents frequently occur due to the inexperience of either the guide or independent climbers. While safety should always be the top priority, achieving it at a high level is unfortunately not always possible in Kamchatka. This region is prone to frequent earthquakes and many other unpredictable situations, which unfortunately leads to such incidents quite often. I do not have the specific details of this particular situation, such as whether they were accompanied by a guide, but I know for certain that climbing Vilyuchinsky in summer is generally very dangerous. It is more common to ascend in winter, equipped with crampons and other snow gear, because snow provides a safer and more stable surface for climbing this peak. However, some still attempt it in summer despite the loose terrain, which is why very few guides lead summer expeditions. Individuals might attempt it unknowingly and without a guide. The danger in summer stems from the fact that Vilyuchinsky is primarily suited for winter ascents. In summer, it is extremely unstable: volcanic slag does not adhere well to the slopes, whereas in winter, when it is covered by snow, the ascent becomes much easier. In summer, unfortunately, landslides and shifting slag are very common occurrences. Local guides must understand where they are going and who they are leading, assessing whether people possess the necessary physical preparation. If there are visitors who have only climbed Vilyuchinsky once, shown the path by a local guide, and then decide they are also qualified guides, it is certainly best to avoid such individuals.”
The regional MES further confirmed that the group of tourists involved in the fall had not registered their ascent. Moreover, the official route to Vilyuchinsky volcano had been closed to climbers since July 1st, specifically due to the heightened risk of rockfalls.
