Fraudsters are increasingly employing a deceptive tactic involving the supposed replacement of intercom keys to swindle Russian citizens.
The scheme involves scammers informing victims that a technician will soon arrive to deliver a new intercom key. The perpetrators then claim that the door can be opened using a special four-digit code, which they supposedly send and ask the victim to provide under the guise of system registration. In reality, the scammers` objective is to obtain access codes for various online service accounts, as explained by Sergey Golovanov, a chief expert at Kaspersky Lab.
Furthermore, a few days later, these malicious actors may re-establish contact, impersonating regulatory bodies. They falsely report that the victim`s personal account has been compromised and instill fear by claiming a loan has been issued in the user`s name. In response, the expert advises activating two-factor authentication, avoiding conversations with unknown individuals, and never disclosing confidential information to anyone.
Previously, reports indicated that telephone fraudsters devised another scam targeting Russians, involving the “issuance of magnetic barrier keys.”
