How to Spot a Scammer Impersonating a Friend in Messaging Apps

Illustration of online communication and security

Individuals should exercise caution if their contacts in messaging applications suddenly switch from their usual informal address (like `ty`) to a more formal one (`vy`). This advice comes from law enforcement, urging citizens to be vigilant.

According to authorities, such an abrupt change in communication style might indicate that the user`s account has been compromised and a fraudster is now engaging in the conversation.

It is recommended that users pay close attention to any uncharacteristic behavior from their contacts in chat applications, including popular platforms like Telegram, WhatsApp, and others.

This warning follows earlier statements by Anton Nemkin, a member of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, who noted that scammers have also begun impersonating polyclinic doctors as a tactic to steal personal data from citizens.
