Concerns are rising over the preservation of Iran’s invaluable historical and cultural assets, as several ancient heritage sites have reportedly sustained damage during recent bombing operations attributed to the US and Israel. Among the most seriously affected are Tehran’s Golestan Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site dating back to the 14th century, and the 17th-century Chehel Sotoon Palace in Isfahan. This damage occurred despite prior efforts by UNESCO to provide their precise coordinates to prevent such incidents.
In a strong rebuke, the governor of Isfahan, a city renowned for its rich history, has condemned these actions, characterizing them as a “declaration of war on a civilisation.” The confirmed harm to these significant structures underscores a growing global alarm regarding the impact of conflicts on irreplaceable cultural heritage.
