Jack Dee Discusses Rick Spleen, His “Lead Balloon” Character: “Many Comedians Lack a Sense of Humour”

Jack Dee reveals that his character, Rick Spleen, from the television series “Lead Balloon,” is essentially a hypothetical version of himself. Dee explains, “Rick’s basically a what-if version of me. Had I not found success, that’s how I would have been – deluding myself into thinking success will come, or believing it’s not my fault that it hasn’t.”

Reflecting on his career, Dee recounted his extensive background in stand-up comedy and his collaborative work with various comedy writers. He developed a keen interest in the intricate relationship and dynamic between a writer and a performer.

This curiosity led him to ponder a crucial question: “What if the writer is funnier than the performer?” Inspired by this idea, he approached Pete Sinclair, a long-time writing partner, to discuss the concept. Following their conversation and proposed idea, BBC4 decided to commission a pilot episode for their new project.
