Japan’s Kyotographie Festival: A Celebration of Photography’s Edge

Japan’s premier international photography festival, Kyotographie, held annually in the spring since 2013, this year embraces the theme “Edge.” This expansive concept allows for considerable curatorial freedom while fostering a palpable sense of tension across the 14 exhibitions comprising the main Kyotographie festival.

Among the highlights of this year’s event are the striking, exclamatory collages by Linder Sterling, a comprehensive retrospective of the groundbreaking work of Daido Moriyama, and a profound journey through apartheid-era South Africa as documented by Ernest Cole.

An untitled image by Daido Moriyama exemplifies his signature “are-bure-boke” style, a technique characterized by its raw, blurred, and out-of-focus aesthetic, capturing a visceral and immediate reality.
