Kill Bill: Volume 1 – My Feel-Good Movie of Cathartic Violence

In our ongoing series exploring unexpected comfort films, I argue that Quentin Tarantino’s bloody revenge epic, Kill Bill: Volume 1, surprisingly fits the bill as a feel-good cinematic experience.

Growing up with older siblings offered a distinct advantage: early exposure to a trove of captivating, often age-inappropriate films. Our household boasted an impressive DVD collection, thanks to my brother and sister’s shared passion for cinema. Though the precise age escapes me, I was undeniably young—perhaps even too young—when I first encountered Kill Bill: Volume 1. Yet, even then, its impact was undeniable, leaving me utterly enthralled.

While many of my cherished movies are riddled with endlessly quotable lines, Kill Bill stands out for a different reason. Only one phrase truly sticks with me, uttered by a rather loathsome character (“My name is Buck, and I’m here to…”). However, what truly endures in my memory is its phenomenal soundtrack, the vivid visual artistry—like the iconic bright yellow tracksuit stained with vibrant, ketchup-red blood—and the exhilarating, hyper-stylized action sequences. These elements conspire to transport me from the drudgery of everyday life into an extraordinary, fantastical saga of vengeance.
