An astonishing discovery has been made in New Zealand: the smallest known variety of kiwi bird,
which was widely believed to have been extinct for half a century, has been rediscovered.
This significant finding was reported by the country`s Department of Conservation,
with information initially conveyed by local radio station RNZ.
This particular species, known scientifically as the pukupuku kiwi or colloquially as
the little spotted kiwi, had not been observed in the wild since 1978.
Its rediscovery came thanks to ranger Iain Graham, who located the bird in a remote,
protected conservation area situated on the western coast of the South Island.
Graham recounted his initial encounter, stating that on the very first night of his search,
he distinctly heard kiwi calls that immediately struck him as different from those of other known species.
He described the subsequent multi-day search for the bird as an intense “rollercoaster” experience.
Following the successful sighting, the diligent ranger collected several feathers for scientific analysis,
which will aid in further research into this remarkable species.
According to the Department of Conservation, the pukupuku species is exceptionally vulnerable to predators,
and its survival heavily relies on the security provided by fenced-off territories.
Currently, the wild population of these unique birds is estimated to be around two thousand individuals.
Encouragingly, their numbers are showing a gradual increase, a testament to the dedicated
and ongoing conservation efforts aimed at protecting this rare avian gem.
