A remarkable find has been made in the historical core of Nizhny Novgorod: archaeologists have uncovered a well-preserved mammoth tooth during ongoing excavation work. This significant discovery was announced by Gleb Nikitin, the Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod Region.
Governor Nikitin shared on his Telegram channel that the archaeological team found a molar belonging to a young woolly mammoth. The ancient relic was discovered on the slope of the Pochainsky Ravine, in proximity to Rozhdestvenskaya Street, at a depth of approximately two meters below the current ground level.
According to research, mammoths indeed roamed the Middle Volga region. Their eventual disappearance, occurring around 11,000 years ago, is linked to a period of rapid climate warming that caused substantial changes in the local vegetation, altering their habitat.
This is not the first instance of mammoth remains being found in the area. The regional head recalled that in the 1930s, fragments of a mammoth skull, complete with two upper molars, were excavated at the base of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin.
The Pochainsky Ravine, which is located near the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin, takes its name from the Pochayna River. This river currently flows through a collector system that was constructed more than 180 years ago. Currently, the ravine is the site of extensive construction activities, part of a comprehensive redevelopment project aimed at revitalizing Nizhny Novgorod`s historic center.
