Mexican Art Community Outraged by Plan to Send Frida Kahlo Masterpieces to Spain

Prominent cultural figures in Mexico are voicing strong opposition to a proposed plan that would see a significant collection of 20th-century Mexican art, featuring iconic works by Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, temporarily moved to Spain. This move, stemming from an agreement with Banco Santander, has ignited widespread concern within Mexico’s arts community.

Almost 400 cultural professionals have co-signed an open letter, urging the Mexican government to provide transparent details regarding the duration and implications of this arrangement for these invaluable pieces. Special attention is drawn to Kahlo’s works, which hold the distinguished status of “artistic monuments” under Mexican law.
