Moscow`s Department of Transport has warned of potential delays and route changes for ground public transport due to the ongoing rain. A meteorologist also provided Business FM with a weather forecast for the week and details on the expected end of the rainy season.
Moscow has endured continuous heavy rain overnight and throughout the day, resulting in significant flooding across multiple districts. Areas particularly impacted include Butovo, Tushino, and Presnya. In the city center, Shmitovsky Proyezd was inundated, with reports and circulating images of an ambulance submerged up to its headlights. The city has recorded nearly a quarter of its average monthly precipitation in just 24 hours.
The Moscow Department of Transport reiterated its warning regarding potential delays and immediate route adjustments for ground public transport due to the rain. However, Alexander Shuvalov, head of the Meteo forecasting center, assured that the heavy rainfall is not expected to impact airport operations.
“Overnight, Kolomna received the most rainfall, over 50 millimeters. This weather front has reached Tver, where heavy rains are continuing, though they have largely stopped in the south. It will likely take another six to seven hours for the rains to completely cease in Moscow. Yes, some areas might experience significant rainfall; for instance, VDNKh station recorded only 11 millimeters overnight, but these are not final figures, and the amount will certainly be higher by the end of the day. The rainy season is expected to conclude around Thursday; by Friday, with a significant rise in atmospheric pressure, pleasant sunny days are anticipated, lasting through Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.”
“Does such heavy rain affect flights?”
“No, there are no strong thunderstorms or powerful wind gusts. Minor interruptions could occur only during a very active part of a cloud, but this is not the case today.”
A yellow weather alert for thunderstorms remains in effect for Moscow and the Moscow region.
