The Moscow Planetarium has announced that a total lunar eclipse is set to occur on September 7, 2025. During this astronomical event, Earth`s natural satellite is expected to acquire a distinctive reddish hue.
This striking coloration is a characteristic feature of total lunar eclipses. It happens when the Moon passes entirely into Earth`s shadow, but is still illuminated by sunlight that has been refracted and scattered by our planet`s atmosphere. Due to the scattering of blue light by the atmosphere, primarily red and orange wavelengths are allowed to pass through, creating the well-known “blood moon” effect.
The specific shade of red displayed by the Moon can vary considerably, ranging from a deep, dark brown to a brighter, light red. This variation is directly influenced by the condition of Earth`s atmosphere at the time of the eclipse, with factors such as dust, clouds, and volcanic ash playing a significant role.
The upcoming total lunar eclipse on September 7, 2025, is scheduled to begin at 18:28 MSK (Moscow Standard Time) and conclude at 23:55 MSK. The period during which the Moon will be fully immersed in Earth`s shadow is anticipated to be from 20:31 to 21:53 MSK. The maximum phase of the eclipse, indicating the deepest point of immersion, will be observed at 21:12 MSK, with a magnitude of 1.368.
This impressive celestial spectacle will offer widespread visibility. Observers across a vast geographical area, including Europe, Asia, Africa, Antarctica, Australia, Oceania, and throughout Russia, will have the opportunity to witness all phases of this total lunar eclipse.
