The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD) of Russia has issued a warning regarding a significant rise in phone fraud cases, with children increasingly becoming the primary victims. The agency has identified specific “code phrases” commonly used by criminals to deceive minors and extort money.
According to the MVD, fraudsters often impersonate employees of educational institutions or state bodies to gain a child`s trust. Once they have established a rapport, they proceed to manipulate the child into revealing their parents` financial information or transferring funds.
The Ministry advises parents and children to be particularly vigilant for the following phrases, which are frequently employed by scammers: “Your parents are suspected of a crime,” “turn on the camera for a search,” “you need to declare money and valuables,” and “you are helping the investigation.” These phrases are designed to create panic or a sense of urgency and importance.
Furthermore, the MVD strongly recommends that children never click on suspicious links, disclose bank card numbers or SMS verification codes, or open banking applications at anyone`s request. If strangers online or via phone ask for money, issue threats, or promise gifts, children should immediately inform their parents or another trusted adult. Prompt communication is crucial in preventing fraud.
Previous reports have also highlighted instances where fraudsters compelled children to conduct “video searches” within their own homes, instructing them to display valuables or documents on camera as part of their deceptive schemes.
