Russian law enforcement has issued a warning regarding a novel and deceptive fraudulent scheme targeting its citizens. This new method of cybercrime exploits a sophisticated fake website that meticulously mimics Telegram`s legitimate Fragment platform, as officially reported by the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD).

According to data provided by the MVD, victims are contacted by individuals posing as eager “buyers.” These scammers feign keen interest in purchasing digital nicknames, often offering inflated prices, and go to great lengths to convince potential victims of the transaction`s legitimacy. They leverage the fact that Fragment is indeed a recognized marketplace where digital assets, such as unique usernames, are genuinely sold using cryptocurrency.

The fraudsters initiate the scam by proposing a “direct request” and then sending a phishing link to the unsuspecting user. This link directs the user to a counterfeit mini-application that is designed to be almost indistinguishable in appearance from the authentic Fragment interface. Victims are subsequently instructed to either deposit funds or pay a 5 percent commission, supposedly to finalize the deal. Once the payment is transferred, the scammer promptly disappears, leaving the defrauded individual with no funds and no digital asset.

MVD`s Official Warning and Advice:

The Ministry of Internal Affairs strongly advises the public to exercise extreme caution. Any offer that creates a sense of urgency, directs you to an unfamiliar third-party bot, requests a verification code, or demands any form of prepayment should be immediately considered highly suspicious and potentially fraudulent. It is crucial to always meticulously verify the official web addresses of platforms and the authentic names of bots before engaging in any transaction or sharing sensitive personal information.

Understanding Telegram`s Fragment Platform:

Fragment, which officially launched in 2022, operates on the TON blockchain. It serves as a decentralized and anonymous marketplace, enabling users to securely purchase and sell a variety of digital assets. These include unique usernames (nicknames) and virtual phone numbers specifically designated for use within the Telegram messaging service.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the increasing sophistication of cybercriminals and the critical importance of digital vigilance. The MVD`s announcement follows other recent reports highlighting the pervasive nature of online fraud. For instance, a recent case involved a 13-year-old boy in Moscow who was coerced into leaving his home after being targeted by scammers impersonating police officers, demanding he prove he had no connections to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Such incidents underscore the diverse and psychologically manipulative tactics employed by these criminals to exploit and harm individuals online.
