Dr. Fred Ramsdell, recipient of the 2025 Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology, discovered he had won the prestigious award a full half-day after the announcement. The New York Times reported that Ramsdell was out of contact, enjoying a vacation in the Rocky Mountains of the western U.S. when the news broke.

According to the publication, Ramsdell was unaware of his Nobel commendation for almost 12 hours following its public revelation, as his Rocky Mountain getaway meant he was disconnected from the outside world.

His wife eventually received a signal on her phone after several days of off-grid hiking, becoming the first to inform him of the win. Consequently, Ramsdell had missed numerous calls from the Nobel Committee, along with hundreds of congratulatory messages and calls from friends and family eager to share in his joy.

The researcher expressed profound happiness about the honor, though he admitted the award came as a complete surprise.

The Nobel Committee in Stockholm had announced the award on Monday, recognizing Ramsdell and his fellow scientists for their groundbreaking work on peripheral immune tolerance. This molecular-cellular mechanism is crucial for preventing autoimmune diseases.
