Andrey Rublev is the sole male Russian player still in the competition, following the unexpected elimination of Karen Khachanov, who lost to the world No. 76, and Roman Safiullin. On the women`s side, Mirra Andreeva, Ekaterina Alexandrova, and Anna Kalinskaya have successfully progressed.

Only four out of 13 Russian tennis players have advanced to the third round of the US Open. The 2025 US Open saw 17 Russian participants initially, with only 13 making it to the second round, and now just four remain for the third round.
In the men`s singles, Andrey Rublev is the sole survivor. Karen Khachanov and Roman Safiullin both lost their matches, with experts highlighting Khachanov`s defeat to world No. 76, Poland`s Kamil Majchrzak, as particularly disappointing and unforeseen. In the women`s draw, Mirra Andreeva, Ekaterina Alexandrova, and Anna Kalinskaya successfully reached the third round.
For Russian tennis players, this outcome marks one of their poorest performances at a Grand Slam tournament in the last five years, with fewer players reaching the third round only at Roland Garros in 2020.
Commenting on the performance of the Russian players who reached the third round and the US Open favorites is Daniil Salnikov, Tennis Editor:
— All four who reached the third round were seeded players, meaning their opponents in the first two rounds were unseeded. Theoretically, they were expected to win, so there`s no major surprise there; they achieved what was expected. It`s a bit disappointing that other seeded Russians, both male and female, lost, with many exiting in the second round. Karen Khachanov`s early exit in the second round stands out. Many of our female players, who were also seeded, could have progressed further; Lyudmila Samsonova`s loss was particularly frustrating.
— Based on the matches you`ve seen, who among the players is the main contender to win the tournament?
— Player rankings and their season performance always play a role. We`ve seen the battles between Sinner and Alcaraz in the last two Grand Slam finals at Roland Garros and Wimbledon. Based on their current matches in this tournament, they remain the favorites, but any favorite can be defeated on any given day. We also shouldn`t forget Novak Djokovic, who excels at preparing specifically for Grand Slams. He has put all his efforts into securing the next Grand Slam, and given the right circumstances, he could defeat both Sinner and Alcaraz on a specific day. In his initial matches, Novak seemed to have some issues, but he found solutions during the course of play. Even weaker opponents, initially considered easy wins, would suddenly find their game before seemingly collapsing. I really hope Andrey Rublev can finally break his quarter-final barrier; he`s had ten such appearances at Grand Slams in his career. Theoretically, he can go further, but it depends on the opponents he faces in each round. Compared to Wimbledon, many seeded players have remained in the draws at the US Open, but there have also been many unexpected exits and defeats, including some Russian players. Many seeded Russians, like Medvedev and Khachanov, lost. But overall, the main seeded players are progressing through the draw, and they are the ones to watch. Any of them could win the tournament.
In the third round of the US Open, Andrey Rublev is set to play Coleman Wong from Hong Kong. Mirra Andreeva will face Taylor Townsend from the USA, Ekaterina Alexandrova will compete against Germany`s Laura Siegemund, and Anna Kalinskaya is scheduled to play world No. 2 Iga Swiatek from Poland.
The US Open tennis championships will continue until September 7th. The tournament`s prize fund for 2025 is $90 million. The defending champions are Jannik Sinner in the men`s singles and Aryna Sabalenka in the women`s singles.
