Poland Buys Radars to Monitor Border with Russia

Polish soldiers begin laying a razor wire barrier along Poland’s border with the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad in Wisztyniec, Poland, on Wednesday Nov. 2, 2022. Poland’s government ordered the construction of the barrier after Russia’s aviation authority decided to launch flights from the Middle East and North Africa to Kaliningrad. Poland has acquired 18 multipurpose surface surveillance radar systems, based on the Israeli ELM-2238/X STAR X radar. These systems are intended to enhance monitoring capabilities.

Specifically, the radars are designated for surveillance of the Baltic Sea coast and the border shared with Russia`s Kaliningrad exclave. The radar network is also planned to be deployed in the area of the `Eastern Shield,` a defensive infrastructure project along Poland`s eastern frontier.

The contract for these radars is valued at 430 million Polish zlotys, equivalent to approximately 118.5 million US dollars. The systems are scheduled for delivery between 2027 and 2030.

In a related development, Poland recently scrambled its aircraft in response to what it described as `Russian activity.` Military command stated that it was `monitoring the current situation` and that `subordinate forces and assets remain in full readiness for immediate response.`
