Two powerful earthquakes recently struck off the coast of Kamchatka, with one reaching a magnitude of 7.6. Following the second tremor, a tsunami alert was briefly issued for several coastal areas but was subsequently cancelled. Preliminary reports indicate no casualties or significant damage.
Vladimir Solodov, head of the Kamchatka Krai, confirmed that the strongest tremors measured 7.6 in magnitude. Authorities in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky had warned of a potential tsunami wave up to two meters high, leading to a state of heightened alert in the Ust-Kamchatsky district. Approximately fifty underground tremors were recorded in total, with five to six being distinctly felt.
Evgeny Sivaev, Editor-in-Chief of “Kamchatskoye Vremya” newspaper:
“There are no major cataclysms; summer is hot and pleasant. Klyuchevskaya volcano, Eurasia`s highest volcanic peak, recently became active again. Today, underground tremors began 170 kilometers from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky in Avacha Bay. Over two dozen events occurred; if you count the small ones, probably up to fifty. About five or six of these earthquakes were noticeable, which is quite unusual for our region, because typically two or three tremors are normal. This time, the sensation was around 6 on the intensity scale, maybe a little more. All results are not yet finalized; seismic stations are working under very high pressure as data is being processed. Seismologists will likely provide more complete information about what is happening in our Pacific Ocean only in the morning. A tsunami threat was announced along the entire coast of the Bering Sea and the Pacific Ocean. It was predicted that in Petropavlovsk, it would be 15 to 30 centimeters, and in the Ust-Kamchatsk area, on the eastern coast, up to 40-60 centimeters, but people did not see any tsunami in either Ust-Kamchatsk or Petropavlovsk. Many people, of course, took precautions and rushed back to their dachas to relax.”
Videos shared on social media by local residents show household items shifting and falling due to the tremors. The tsunami threat was later fully lifted for Severo-Kurilsk on Paramushir Island, as confirmed by the Sakhalin Region Emergency Situations Ministry.
