Powerful Rainstorms Hit Sochi, Storm Warning Remains In Effect

Due to heavy rainfall, several streets and homes in Sochi were flooded, leading to resident evacuations. The most significant precipitation occurred in the Adler district and the federal territory of “Sirius.”

Flooding in Sochi after heavy rain

A storm warning remains in place for Sochi following intense downpours that caused widespread flooding in various streets and residential buildings, necessitating resident displacement. Fallen trees were promptly cleared by emergency crews, making roads passable again. Sochi Airport continues to operate normally, and river levels have not reached dangerous marks.

The Adler district and the “Sirius” federal territory bore the brunt of the heavy rainfall. The Ministry of Emergency Situations has issued warnings about a four-to-five-point sea storm, resulting in closed beaches. According to observer Evgeny Perelchuk, the adverse weather in the “Sirius” federal territory began last evening with strong winds, leading to the closure of all outdoor pools and attractions. Beaches were also closed. The cold, strong wind was powerful enough to tear umbrellas, and intense lightning and thunder lasted for most of the night, preventing sleep until 3 AM. By midday, the wind had weakened slightly, but the weather remained cold, with temperatures dropping to +15 degrees Celsius, and rain persisted. The forecast indicates continued rain for today and tomorrow, with the storm warning valid until October 11. The Ministry of Emergency Situations` alerts include heavy rains, thunderstorms, hail, winds up to 25 meters per second, rising river levels, mudslides, and waterspouts over the Black Sea near Sochi and “Sirius,” signifying a full spectrum of hazardous natural phenomena. Flooding has been primarily observed in low-lying areas of Sochi proper, within both urban and private sectors, while the Adler district and “Sirius” have so far avoided significant inundation.

While the coast deals with the aftermath of the rain, snow has fallen in the mountains of Sochi for the second time this season, a stark contrast to the coastal deluge.
