MOSCOW – Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a groundbreaking achievement by Russian nuclear scientists that promises to largely address the challenge of uranium supply for atomic energy. The statement was made during the `World Atomic Week` international forum in Moscow.
The head of state revealed plans to launch the world`s first closed nuclear fuel cycle energy system in the Tomsk region by 2030.
Putin described this as a truly revolutionary development by domestic scientists and engineers. He elaborated that this system would enable approximately 95% of spent nuclear fuel to be repeatedly recycled and reused in reactors. This mechanism is expected to almost entirely resolve the long-standing problems associated with the accumulation of radioactive waste and, crucially, overcome concerns regarding uranium availability.
The `World Atomic Week` international forum, which focuses on the nuclear and related industries, is being held from September 25 to 28, marking the 80th anniversary of the Russian atomic industry.
