Quentin Tarantino’s long-anticipated debut play, “The Popinjay Cavalier,” is slated for an early 2027 premiere in London’s illustrious West End. Since its initial announcement last year, details surrounding Tarantino’s foray into theatre have been as enigmatic as a plot point in one of his films. However, new information released this Wednesday confirms that the play, which Tarantino himself will direct, is an “1830s rambunctious comedy of deception and disguise,” set against a European backdrop.
Promotional materials describe “The Popinjay Cavalier” as a work drawing inspiration from “swashbuckling epics of stage and screen,” promising a grand “celebration of theatre and its heightened romance,” infused with Tarantino’s distinctive flair and undeniable wit. This revelation contrasts with earlier speculation that suggested the play might be a more conventional “classic British trouser-dropping” farce.
Produced by Sonia Friedman Productions and Sony Pictures Entertainment, the play will undergo development throughout this year, culminating in its much-anticipated 2027 opening at a West End venue yet to be disclosed.
