Since Tarantino first announced his venture into playwriting last year, details surrounding his debut stage production have been kept under wraps, drawing comparisons to the mysterious contents of Marsellus Wallace’s briefcase in “Pulp Fiction.” However, it was recently revealed that the play, which Tarantino himself will direct in London, is indeed an 1830s European-set “rambunctious comedy of deception and disguise.”
Publicity materials characterize “The Popinjay Cavalier” as being inspired by “swashbuckling epics of stage and screen.” It is envisioned as a grand “sweeping celebration of theatre and its heightened romance,” all presented with Tarantino’s distinct signature style and unmistakable wit. Earlier rumors had suggested the play might take the form of a “classic British trouser-dropping” farce, but the official description paints a clearer picture.
