Roscosmos Head Confirms ISS Leak Poses No Threat

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida, USA – August 1, 2025

Roscosmos head Dmitry Bakanov stated that a leak in the transfer compartment of the International Space Station`s (ISS) Russian segment poses no threat to the station`s life support systems.

Bakanov emphasized that, in his view, the concern surrounding the leak is somewhat exaggerated. He noted that from March to July of the current year, the leak rate decreased tenfold, leading to a point where it was even thought to have been completely stopped.

The head of the space agency added that efforts to address this issue have been ongoing for over six years. He specifically highlighted that the leak is located in the transfer module, rather than a central compartment, which means it does not affect the ISS`s life support or the safety of the cosmonauts. According to Bakanov, Roscosmos is working closely with NASA on this matter, and the American side has not expressed any concerns.

Previously, Roscosmos Deputy Head Sergey Krikalev confirmed that the air leak in the ISS`s Russian segment persists but its intensity has significantly reduced.

The leak was first reported in September 2019. Over the past years, several attempts have been made to fix the leak, but all have only yielded partial results.
