Russia Warns Citizens of New Fake Scam Messages

The Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) has issued a critical warning, urging the public, particularly senior citizens, to be vigilant against a new wave of deceptive online communications. These fraudulent messages falsely claim to originate from the Pension Fund of Russia, with the sole intent of defrauding unsuspecting recipients.

Anatomy of the Scam: How Fraudsters Operate

Cybercriminals are deploying aggressive tactics, sending out urgent notifications, often through messaging platforms like Telegram. These messages are designed to create panic and pressure, containing alarming statements such as, “You have ignored this message from the channel administration three times, and this is the last reminder.” Beyond the intimidation, the scams attempt to lure potential victims with attractive yet false promises, including a supposed 30 percent increase in pension benefits, which they claim can be easily secured with just a single document.

To further ensnare their targets, these deceptive communications often announce a “new bonus for pensioners,” specifically targeting individuals aged 58 to 84. These fraudulent messages frequently include an invitation to join a separate online channel, a common tactic used by scammers to either collect more personal information or disseminate further malicious content.

Official Alert: Exercise Extreme Caution! The Ministry of Internal Affairs has unequivocally confirmed that these mailings are fraudulent. They are specifically engineered to exploit and defraud vulnerable pensioners, and all citizens are strongly advised to exercise extreme caution and verify any such claims through official channels only.

Crucial Context: The End of the Pension Fund of Russia It is vital for everyone to remember that the Pension Fund of Russia officially ceased to exist in January 2023. Its functions and responsibilities were fully absorbed by the newly established Social Fund. This fundamental change in structure immediately exposes the deceitful nature of any communication claiming to be from the former Pension Fund.

A Troubling Trend: Significant Financial Losses for Seniors

This latest warning comes amidst a disturbing trend of substantial financial losses suffered by Russian pensioners due to similar fraud schemes. Earlier reports from 2025 indicated that elderly citizens across Russia collectively lost an astonishing sum of at least 3.5 billion rubles to scammers. Individual losses in these incidents typically vary widely, ranging from 30,000 rubles to as much as 20 million rubles. A consistent pattern observed is that fraudsters frequently succeed in acquiring significant amounts, often exceeding five million rubles per victim, underscoring the severe financial impact and widespread nature of these pervasive scams.
