Russia`s ambitious space mission to Venus, initially slated for 2036, could potentially be fast-tracked for an earlier launch. However, a lunar probe mission is prioritized before the Venusian expedition, according to Gennady Krasnikov, President of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
“Venus is targeted for around 2036. We will endeavor to launch earlier, but the Moon comes first,” Krasnikov stated, underscoring the immediate focus on lunar exploration.
He also highlighted the recent approval of a new space industry development program, in which the Russian Academy of Sciences played a significant role. This comprehensive program outlines the strategic direction for future Russian space endeavors.
Krasnikov emphasized that this program includes a substantial segment dedicated to scientific space research, boasting an unprecedented level of funding—the largest in modern Russian history. This significant financial commitment reflects Russia`s renewed focus on advancing its capabilities in space science.
Concluding his remarks, the head of the Russian Academy of Sciences detailed the program`s ambitious objectives: exploring deep space with new advanced telescopes, specifically mentioning projects like `Spektr-UF` and `Millimetron`. The program also reconfirms ongoing exploration of both Venus and the Moon, outlines projects for studying solar-terrestrial connections, and continues to prioritize biomedical research in space—areas where Russia traditionally maintains a leadership position.
