Several high-profile matches are set to take place as the Russian Premier League restarts. These include a crucial encounter between Baltika and Zenit, and the highly anticipated Moscow derby featuring Spartak and Dynamo. The outcomes of these upcoming rounds could significantly shift the balance of power among the league leaders.

A capital derby and a match between league leaders – a fixture many believe won`t be easily replicated – highlight the return of the Russian football championship. The league resumed on Friday, September 12, with Rubin securing a 1-0 home victory against Dynamo Makhachkala, moving up to fifth place.
The eagerly awaited leader`s match features Baltika vs. Zenit. A year ago, this pairing would have sounded absurd, but today it`s a reality. Talalaev`s team shares second place with CSKA and Lokomotiv, with Zenit trailing closely behind. The reigning champions aim to close the three-point gap in Kaliningrad this Sunday, with the match kicking off at 17:00. This game is also a rematch of last year`s Russian Cup final, where Zenit miraculously equalized and then secured a victory with a last-minute goal from Nuraly Alip in extra time. Overpowering the highly organized hosts at Rostec Arena will be a challenge for the blue-white-sky blues. They will need their skilled `jokers` to step up, such as the €25 million signing Gerson, who is still adapting to Russia after moving from Brazil. Zenit`s coach, Sergei Semak, is prepared to be patient:
“Changing countries, changing championships – adaptation is part of the process. Currently, his physical condition isn`t at its best. He wants to play better, and he will play better! There`s definitely an effect of overwork right now. It`s been a tiring period for him, linked to many factors. He has played a lot this season and is simply not physically ready to show his best football. But he will definitely return; he is a player with excellent qualities. I think he will help us. It takes time. Sometimes it happens. Wendel from Portugal and Malcom from Spain also took time to integrate into the team`s play. Our championship is intense.”
Indeed, Wendel and Malcom didn`t immediately hit their stride. We`ll see how another new signing performs: Spartak acquired Ghanaian national team defender Djiku from Fenerbahçe for €2.5 million. Whether the `Red-Whites` number four will feature in Saturday`s match at Dynamo`s VEB Arena remains to be seen, with kick-off at 16:45. Simultaneously, Akhmat will face Lokomotiv. Amidst these central clashes, even the league leader`s match has been somewhat overshadowed: Krasnodar will host Akron, but without their star forward Cordoba, who was controversially red-carded in the previous game against CSKA. According to Krasnodar`s head coach Murad Musaev, Cordoba was also subjected to disrespectful behavior as he left the field:
“Cordoba, who was sent off, is walking past. All the coaches and footballers who are sitting on the bench stand up and do this (claps). They clap at Cordoba, provoking him and showing their disrespect. If this is normal behavior in Switzerland, then in Russia, I`m seeing it for the first time. Okay, a player was sent off, you gained a numerical advantage. And he was sent off, arguably unfairly. And he`s walking, and all of you – all the coaches! – are provoking him, and the players are following them… For me, this is just blatant rudeness. I`ve never seen anything like it. Perhaps in Switzerland, men behave this way. But in Russia, no one does that. No one gloats over a player who has been sent off. To provoke him even further: so that he might do something and receive an even longer suspension.”
Explanation: Switzerland is the homeland of CSKA`s new head coach, Fabio Celestini. On Sunday at 19:30, the `Red-Blues` will begin their away match in Rostov. They will be without the injured, highly-paced Kirill Glebov, as the 19-year-old midfielder sustained a thigh injury while playing for the national team against Jordan. Top scorers include Batrakov of Lokomotiv and Daku of Rubin, both with seven goals. Their closest challengers have a maximum of five.
Current Standings
