Russians Warned About New Scammer Trick

Law enforcement agencies are alerting citizens to a novel scam tactic where fraudsters now persuade victims to install a messenger application for continued communication.

Scammers have refined their deceptive schemes, introducing an additional phase where they request potential victims to install a messenger application. This latest warning was issued by the Ministry of Internal Affairs through its cybersecurity communication channels.

Posing as representatives of official organizations, these fraudsters call citizens and, under various pretexts—such as claims of enhanced security, convenience, operational speed, or confidentiality—insist on the installation of a high-quality messaging app for further discussions.

Officials strongly emphasize that there is absolutely no legitimate reason for government employees, company representatives, or law enforcement officers to conduct official correspondence via messenger applications.

The Ministry also reiterated the importance of creating robust passwords. Passwords containing simple numerical sequences or personal data, such as relatives` names, are easily compromised by malicious actors, making accounts vulnerable to hacking.
