Scientific Advancements in Russia: A Response to New Challenges

In a recent interview, Gennady Krasnikov, President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, shared insights into how the ongoing special military operation has become a powerful catalyst for scientific research and development across Russia.

Krasnikov highlighted significant progress in critical areas, specifically mentioning the creation of new materials and advancements in hypersonic technologies. He affirmed that, much like historical periods of major military confrontations, the current situation has spurred innovative directions for research and development.

He articulated that the contemporary nature of warfare, driven by cutting-edge technologies, continually presents scientists with novel challenges and demands. These challenges, Krasnikov noted, are being actively met by the Russian scientific community.

A particular emphasis has been placed on unmanned systems, including those that integrate advanced machine learning capabilities. Krasnikov pointed out the increasing relevance of the “drone swarm” concept, where autonomous aerial vehicles would be coordinated and controlled by artificial intelligence, rather than relying solely on human operators.

Beyond the realm of unmanned aerial vehicles, robust research efforts are underway in various other fields. Krasnikov confirmed active engagement in virtually all key technological sectors, including continued development in new materials and hypervelocity flight systems.

Krasnikov expressed confidence that the successes achieved by the Russian military during the operation are, to a considerable extent, a direct result of the dedicated work of Russian scientists. He underscored the deep involvement of members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, many of whom serve as leading general designers and technologists, playing direct roles in these vital processes.

He further elaborated on the distinguished composition of the Academy: “Among our current academicians, there are approximately 10 Heroes of Russia and the Soviet Union, 23 Heroes of Labour, and 21 full recipients of the Order `For Merit to the Fatherland.` One of our academicians, Yuri Semenovich Solomonov, holds both the title of Hero of Russia and Hero of Labour concurrently.” Krasnikov concluded by stating that numerous Academy members are actively participating in these endeavors, either personally or by heading various research organizations. He stressed that considering the fundamental research conducted by scientists in the domain of national defense and security, the Academy of Sciences` involvement is exceptionally proactive and impactful.
