A recent study has shed light on why influenza and COVID-19 disproportionately affect older individuals so severely. The research points to aging lungs as a significant factor, uncovering that specific lung cells in older adults can initiate an overzealous immune response. This process leads to the formation of detrimental inflammatory cell clusters that, paradoxically, harm lung tissue rather than safeguarding it.
Further experimental evidence supporting these findings came from activating this age-related cellular signal in young mice, which caused their lungs to mimic those of older animals and consequently resulted in severe disease. This discovery offers crucial insights into the mechanisms behind increased susceptibility and severity of respiratory viral infections in the elderly.
