‘Uncool rules’: the lo-fi pop pranksters reviving the Dutch answer to dada
The distinctive Dutch brand of ‘ludiek’ – a lively, mischievous spirit – flourished during the rebellious 1960s protest era. Today, a new cultural wave, known as the New Dutch Naivety movement, is bringing back this eccentricity through pop songs about whimsical themes such as chocolate, efficient public transport, and even anti-smoking policies.
Imagine a song where the bustling center of Amsterdam magically transforms into chocolate, prompting children to joyfully consume it. This confectionery cityscape then gently melts away as you take a train from Amsterdam Lelylaan to Haarlemmermeer. This imaginative narrative forms the core of "Amsterdam is opeens van chocolade" ("Amsterdam is suddenly chocolate"), a track penned by the young alt-pop musician, Thor Kissing. It serves as a perfect illustration of the cheeky and rebellious ‘ludiek’ ('playfulness') that defined 20th-century Dutch popular culture, a spirit that now appears to be experiencing a vibrant resurgence.
Kissing plays a central role in an ongoing project aiming to redefine what ‘ludiek’ music means in the 21st century: two compilation albums titled "Nieuwe Nederlandse Naïviteit" ("New Dutch Naivety"). These albums showcase a diverse collection of contemporary alternative Dutch-language pop artists. The first volume was launched in October 2024 at a modest youth center in a less-known suburb of Zaandam. The second volume is anticipated for release this March, in the more fashionable setting of Amsterdam.
