A troubling new wave of cybercrime is sweeping across Russia, with fraudsters now specifically targeting citizens on their birthdays. This cunning and sophisticated deception tactic was brought to light by Yana Lantratova, head of the State Duma Committee on Civil Society Development, in a recent interview with RIA Novosti.
Lantratova disclosed that these criminals employ a highly intricate scheme: they meticulously track the birth dates of individuals. On the morning of a person`s birthday, scammers initiate phone calls, convincingly impersonating delivery couriers. Their fabricated story revolves around an allegedly pre-ordered gift. This deceptive pretext is used to illicitly obtain sensitive personal information, including passport details and home addresses. The scam escalates as they then pressure unsuspecting victims into providing SMS verification codes. “Ultimately, instead of receiving a celebratory gift, the victim discovers their bank account has been completely emptied,” Lantratova cautioned.
She also highlighted the striking similarity of this new birthday scam to other existing fraudulent tactics, such as those involving fake flower deliveries. Lantratova emphasized that individuals celebrating their birthdays are particularly susceptible to such deceptions. During these joyous times, people are often more relaxed, less vigilant, and more open to receiving congratulations, making it significantly harder for them to recognize and resist a deceptive call.
This alarming development comes on the heels of earlier reports detailing various other scams impacting Russian citizens, including schemes where fraudsters pose as legitimate property owners to collect rental deposits for apartments before promptly disappearing. These incidents collectively underscore an urgent and growing need for heightened vigilance against increasingly cunning and diverse online and phone-based deceptions.
