Spanish politicians clash over request to move Picasso’s Guernica

Leaders from the Madrid and Basque regional governments have exchanged sharp words, accusing each other of being ‘provincial’ amid an escalating dispute over the artwork. A significant disagreement has emerged between Spain’s Madrid and Basque regional administrations concerning a proposal to temporarily display Guernica, often regarded as Pablo Picasso’s most iconic masterpiece. The Basque government aims for the painting to be exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, coinciding with the upcoming 90th anniversary of the devastating bombing of the Basque town that inspired the artwork. Currently, Guernica resides in Madrid’s Reina Sofía museum, its home since 1992. Despite numerous appeals from the Basque Country over the years for the artwork to be relocated, these requests have consistently been denied.
