Moscow, August 7 – The Sun experienced its second M-class solar flare today, marking the second most powerful such event recorded this August, according to the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy at the Space Research Institute (IKI) of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The Laboratory stated that “the Sun has, meanwhile, reconfigured itself and transitioned from a mode of energy release through numerous moderate events to a mode of accumulating energy and forming distinct large explosions. Two strong M-class flares, M2.2 and M3.9, occurred this morning.”
Scientists had reported the earlier M2.2 flare on Thursday morning. Additionally, five weaker C-class flares were observed on the Sun today.
The first M-class flare in a month and a half was detected on August 3. Since then, several such flares have occurred, with the most potent, an M4.4 event, registered on August 5.
As Sergey Bogachev, head of the Laboratory, previously stated, geomagnetic disturbances, potentially including magnetic storms, are anticipated on Earth on August 8. These disturbances will be caused by solar material reaching Earth following the August 5 flare, as well as an active coronal hole currently present on the Sun.
