Tennis Player Ostapenko Accused of Racism at US Open

Prominent figures in women`s tennis have openly criticized Latvian athlete Jelena Ostapenko for the inflammatory remarks she directed at her opponent, Taylor Townsend. The controversy has catapulted Townsend into the spotlight as a US Open sensation, while Ostapenko now faces widespread accusations of racism.

Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia was defeated by African-American player Taylor Townsend with a score of 7:5, 6:1. Following their match, the two athletes engaged in a heated exchange at the net. Both later recounted the details of their dispute. Ostapenko accused Townsend of breaching unwritten yet established rules of court conduct. Specifically, she claimed Townsend began her warm-up directly at the net, rather than the customary baseline, and failed to apologize after a point was won with the help of a net cord, a gesture typically expected in tennis. Ultimately, Ostapenko shouted at Townsend, “You have no class and no education,” adding, “We`ll see what happens when we play outside the USA,” implying Townsend`s behavior was influenced by playing on her home ground.

However, both the public and numerous other tennis players perceived these comments as a clear instance of racism. Naomi Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion, stated that Ostapenko`s words constituted “one of the worst things a Black player can hear in a sport where the vast majority of players are white.” Ostapenko later issued an apology, asserting that the allegations of racism against her were baseless.

Pavel Nitkin, a tennis editor, offered his perspective:

“It`s unlikely there was such a subtext, because all these individuals – American commentators discussing it, and Naomi Osaka herself, who grew up in the USA – view this through their own lens. I am confident that Ostapenko didn`t even intend to provoke [in a racist context]; she simply wanted to create a bit of a stir. It happens.”

Such incidents are not uncommon for Jelena Ostapenko, who is well-known for her challenging temperament. She has frequently been involved in controversies in the past, including using expletives on court, breaking rackets, inciting disputes with umpires, and refusing to shake opponents` hands. For example, during the Rome tournament in 2023, Elena Rybakina`s coach complained that Ostapenko had insulted his protégé, using impolite language to describe her.

Mikhail Ivanov, a chief editor, believes that this time, the Latvian athlete made a double miscalculation:

“In America, every word holds significant weight. It`s a country where a few words can cost millions if your opponent has a good lawyer. So, there`s nothing surprising here. But if Townsend had been a different, white tennis player, perhaps nothing of the sort would have happened, even if Ostapenko had said those very words. Skin color matters immensely. Townsend represents the Black population of America. Therefore, anything Ostapenko says against her will be amplified twofold or threefold, so, one way or another, Ostapenko found herself in a difficult situation.”

Interestingly, Townsend herself did not interpret Ostapenko`s post-match remarks as racist. The athlete declared, “I didn`t take it as a manifestation of racism. Although lack of education was once a stigma for the Black community, it has nothing to do with reality. Whether there was a racial undertone in her comments or not, only she knows. I`m just happy I let my racquet do the talking.”

Despite Townsend`s personal take, the scandal garnered front-page coverage on CNN, and The New York Post proclaimed Townsend “the face, voice, and conscience of the tournament.” The first-round women`s doubles match involving Taylor Townsend, ranked 139th in the world, drew a record number of spectators.
