Tesla`s self-driving system has introduced a new driving mode named “Mad Max,” as noted by experts from the “Not a Tesla App” project. This feature marks a shift towards more dynamic vehicle control, drawing parallels to the iconic dystopian film.
The “Mad Max” mode, included in the Full Self-Driving (FSD) update version 14.1.2, permits the electric vehicle to reach speeds of up to 85 mph (140 km/h) on highways. When activated, the FSD system allows for more assertive driving, aiming to optimize travel time.
While developers assure that this mode is designed to operate within traffic laws, the vehicle will more frequently utilize the maximum permissible speed. Additionally, it will perform a greater number of maneuvers and lane changes. The primary goal is to actively switch lanes to achieve the destination more quickly.
It`s worth noting that FSD already includes a similar active driving mode called “Hurry,” which was introduced in summer 2024. This existing mode also enables the car to travel faster and change lanes more frequently, suggesting a trend towards more performance-oriented autonomous driving options.
The introduction of such assertive driving modes comes amidst a recent investigation launched by the U.S. regulator NHTSA. U.S. authorities are currently examining 2.9 million Tesla electric vehicles equipped with FSD due to a reported increase in accident incidents. This scrutiny highlights ongoing debates about the safety and implications of advanced autonomous driving technologies.
