The original 1980s television adaptation of Barbara Taylor Bradford’s sensational novel, *A Woman of Substance*, achieved unprecedented viewership for Channel 4, setting a record for ratings. Now, as the broadcaster revisits this iconic story, the cast and creative team delve into its enduring themes of feminism, revenge, and its notably adventurous depictions of intimacy, including specific “sex caves.”
Nestled within the expansive West Yorkshire moors lies a location playfully dubbed “the sex cave” by the production team of the new *A Woman of Substance*. This striking spot serves as the setting for heroine Emma Harte’s pivotal loss of virginity in the forthcoming opulent adaptation of Barbara Taylor Bradford’s best-selling “bonkbuster” novel.
Showrunner Katherine Jakeways describes the site as “hidden away and beautiful,” noting that “the lighting in there almost looks like AI, but it’s real.” She humorously adds, “Weirdly, it’s about a mile from my mother-in-law’s house. I haven’t told her yet that it’s a sex cave!” This distinctive location is, in fact, merely one among several unconventional settings chosen for the series’ intimate moments.
Jessica Reynolds, portraying the young Emma, concurs with a laugh: “Oh my God, I know! Not just the cave, but there’s a little love shack, too.” She elaborates on the cave’s beauty, stating, “The cave is the most stunning location, with sunlight coming through these arching rocks. I wonder if they used it in *Wuthering Heights*, too? If they didn’t, they should have.”
