The Most Prevalent Scammer Personas Revealed

A recent study indicates that the majority of fraud cases targeting individuals involve cybercriminals posing as employees of postal services, delivery companies, or financial institutions. The deceptive tactic of falsely claiming compromised government online services also continues to be a prevalent scheme.

Data from 2025 reveals that approximately 90 percent of all reported scams fell into these categories. Fraudsters frequently impersonate financial regulators, contacting victims with urgent warnings about suspicious activity on their bank accounts or credit cards. Their ultimate aim is to trick individuals into revealing sensitive card details, security codes, or to pressure them into making immediate transfers to a supposed “secure” account. A similar deceptive narrative is employed when criminals falsely claim that a victim`s account in a state-run online service has been breached.

When operating under the guise of “delivery services” or “post offices,” scammers typically deploy phishing strategies. They direct victims to fraudulent payment forms, illicitly obtaining money for a non-existent delivery or parcel.

A growing trend observed this year is the exploitation of fake brands from popular marketplaces and retailers. Victims are often enticed by promises of quick earnings through fabricated online chats, only to find their money transferred to third parties after attempting to “redeem” products or engage in the bogus schemes.

In addition, recent warnings have been issued regarding a new type of utility bill fraud. This scheme involves the use of sophisticated counterfeit Telegram bots designed to impersonate legitimate management companies, homeowners` associations (HOAs), or emergency services, aiming to trick users into fraudulent payments.
