TV tonight: how the Dunblane massacre led Britain to ban handguns

Marking the 30th anniversary of the devastating school atrocity, a new documentary features the compelling stories of individuals who tirelessly campaigned for the outlawing of handguns in Britain.

The film opens with a former PE teacher recounting, with striking composure, the events of March 13, 1996. On that day, a gunman tragically entered a Dunblane primary school gym, opening fire on the adults and children present. This incident remains the deadliest firearms atrocity in the UK’s history.

The documentary meticulously details the subsequent movement to ban private handguns, offering perspectives from victims’ parents, TV presenter Lorraine Kelly, former Prime Minister Tony Blair, and other key figures involved in the legislative push. Lorraine Kelly highlights the arduous nature of this campaign, stating, “There’s an assumption that this horrific thing happened and guns were banned. It didn’t happen like that,” underscoring the significant effort and advocacy required to achieve the ban.
