Ty Herndon: “The drugs could be forgiven. Being gay definitely could not”

Country music star Ty Herndon is bravely sharing his deeply personal journey in a new memoir, revealing the challenges of being a closeted gay man in the industry, experiences with sexual assault, and discovering love later in life. In June 1995, at the peak of his career with a chart-topping single and a rapidly rising album, Herndon’s world was rocked by an arrest that threatened to end it all. The incident unfolded in Texas when, under the influence of methamphetamine, he visited a park known for gay hookups.

There, he encountered an undercover officer, leading to his arrest on charges including drug possession and indecent exposure. The news quickly spread, fueled by police who deliberately tipped off the media. Meanwhile, Herndon’s record label launched an aggressive public relations campaign. This strategy portrayed him as a victim of drug abuse, while simultaneously fabricating stories to cover up the sexual nature of the encounter. Reflecting on that turbulent time from his Nashville home, Herndon powerfully states, “The drugs could be forgiven. Being gay definitely could not.”
