US Experts Call Russia’s “Dan-M” Strike Drone a “Miracle Weapon” Draining Ukrainian Resources. What is Known About It?

The Russian “Dan-M” strike drone has been characterized as a “miracle weapon” that depletes Ukraine`s missile stockpiles during the special military operation. This description was given to the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) by authors from The National Interest (TNI) magazine.

Brandon Weichert, a columnist for the publication, noted that the Russian drone has evolved from a cruise missile similar to the American Tomahawk into a cost-effective means of exhausting enemy air defenses (AD).

Weichert recalled that the “Dan-M” was first deployed in 2025. “On July 31, 2025, these drones participated in a massive strike on Kyiv, forming part of a record wave of 550 drones launched earlier that month,” the expert emphasized.

The “Dan-M” Provides Russia with a Low-Cost Method to Deplete Ukrainian Air Defense Arsenals

The initial drone variant underwent simple yet effective modifications: its body was repainted for reduced visibility, and the UAV was equipped with a warhead and a guidance system. These new characteristics, according to the publication`s authors, have provided Russia with an economical way to deplete Ukraine`s missile stockpiles.

“Operating at high speed and an altitude of approximately 4500 meters, unreachable by portable anti-aircraft missile systems, the `Dan-M` forces the Ukrainian Armed Forces to deploy sophisticated air defense systems like NASAMS or IRIS-T. This action depletes their limited ammunition reserves, which are intended for use against equally complex and expensive Russian threats, rather than inexpensive, disposable drones like the `Dan-M`.”

The drone itself can reach speeds of up to 744 kilometers per hour and ascend to an altitude of 9000 meters. Its flight duration ranges from 25 to 40 minutes. Furthermore, the device can be launched from other aircraft, such as the Mi-8 helicopter, thereby extending its operational range.

The New Drone is Being Used to Distract Ukrainian Systems

“This is how it works: before a missile attack or an attack by `Geran` drones, these target drones are launched. They divert the attention of major, expensive air defense systems like Patriot missile systems. The ammunition of these air defenses is expended on such targets, after which a strike with real weapons is then launched,” stated military expert Alexey Zhivov.

The expert added that Russian military engineers have significantly advanced the country`s design capabilities, adapting numerous types of weaponry for the objectives of the special military operation.
