Why Sentimental Value Should Win the Best Picture Oscar

Unlike its more flamboyant competitors, Joachim Trier’s nuanced family saga stands out as a triumph of mature filmmaking, surpassing others in its ability to spotlight exceptional performances. This year’s Best Picture nominations feature an array of ambitious and daring cinematic ventures: from a politically charged sanctuary city drama and a sprawling Jewish fantasy to a Brazilian B-movie-inspired thriller, a quirky alien-invasion conspiracy, a roaring motorsport epic, and tales of monsters, vampires, railroad construction, and Shakespearean intrigue. Amidst these, there’s also a poignant drama exploring an actor’s familial struggles.

However, if ‘Sentimental Value’ appears to be the most unassuming contender among this year’s nominees, then its true depth may have been underestimated. From what might initially seem like conventional subject matter, Danish-Norwegian co-writer and director Joachim Trier has intricately woven a grand and expansive narrative: a multi-generational family epic that spans decades, skillfully interwoven with a meta-narrative about filmmaking itself.

The film evokes the emotional intensity of a Bergman classic, yet, akin to Trier’s acclaimed ‘The Worst Person in the World,’ it tackles profound themes with a notable buoyancy and even a touch of playfulness. Furthermore, no other Oscar-nominated film this year offers such a compelling platform for its cast, presenting four substantial roles that allowed its superb, also Oscar-nominated, lead actors to truly shine.
