Wildfire Near Gelendzhik Expands Significantly

A significant natural fire near Gelendzhik, Russia, has grown considerably, now covering an area of 12 hectares. Initial reports indicated the blaze affected four hectares, but its containment is proving difficult due to the rugged, mountainous terrain and prevailing hot, dry weather conditions.

The wildfire in the Gelendzhik forestry area of Krasnodar Krai has expanded to 12 hectares. The high temperatures, reaching up to 40 degrees Celsius, are exacerbating the situation.

The fire erupted in a remote, mountainous region close to the resort village of Kabardinka. Authorities confirm that the blaze is burning far from residential areas, and there is no immediate threat to homes.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations reports that over 130 personnel and 24 pieces of equipment, including an Mi-8 helicopter, are involved in the firefighting efforts.

Local Perspectives and Impact

Natalia Bragina, a local resident and real estate expert, stated that there is no smell of smoke along the Gelendzhik coast:

“A significant number of people are engaged in fighting the fire; helicopters are actively dropping water. The weather is extremely hot, with temperatures reaching 35-40 degrees Celsius in Gelendzhik today, accompanied by a stifling, dry atmosphere. Kabardinka is about 15-18 kilometers from Gelendzhik. While driving from Kabardinka to Gelendzhik, one can observe helicopters involved in the firefighting. I`ve also heard many people are involved in extinguishing the blaze. However, in Gelendzhik itself, the air is clear, the beaches are calm, and tourists are enjoying their time by the sea without any smoke or smell of burning.”

However, due to the proximity of a power line to the fire, the resort experienced electricity outages. Power grid operations are now gradually being restored. Tourism industry representatives report that tourists were not significantly affected, as most hotels have backup generators for such events.

Despite the overall calm, tourist Evgenia shared some inconveniences:

“We are currently on the beach in Gelendzhik, and there`s no smell of smoke, but everyone knows about the fires in Kabardinka. Due to the fire in Kabardinka, electricity was cut off on many streets in Gelendzhik. Some shops are closed, and traffic lights are out, which is very uncomfortable. Otherwise, as far as Gelendzhik itself is concerned, no other consequences are observed.”

Anna Kabulova, General Manager of the `Zhemchuzhina Morya` sanatorium and children`s camp in Kabardinka, stated that the cause of the fire has not yet been announced:

“The fire is in the forest area, and by evening, everything was localized. Power supply has been fully restored. I believe the response was very swift, despite today`s anomalous heat—it was 41 degrees Celsius in the shade. An EMERCOM helicopter was deployed, along with 12 units of equipment, and 180 people participated in the efforts. We even sent our own personnel from the sanatorium. We always respond very quickly and cooperatively to such unfortunate events. People are understanding, and we always try to help in these situations. I think everything was handled very efficiently. No official cause for the fire has been announced yet. It might be due to the heat and dry forest. I believe versions will emerge soon, as an investigation will certainly be conducted. The weather is very dry, with no rain.”

The Russian Union of Tourism Industry reported that the Gelendzhik fire is located far from hotels and does not pose a threat to tourists. No complaints have been received from vacationers.
